CouchSurfing charging for membership

All of us who are members of Couchsurfing belief in something greater than money, possessions, and status. It took over 14 years for the Couchsurfing community to come together. Without your immediate help, this community will be lost forever.

Given the challenging realities brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Couchsurfing will soon be unable to meet our financial obligations. We have reduced the size of our team, taken pay cuts, eliminated or renegotiated all contracts, eliminated our physical office space (we are now a 100% remote workforce), and applied for COVID-19 relief funds provided by the United States Government through the CARES Act. Unfortunately, this will not be enough.

As of May 14, 2020, we are asking for member contributions of $2.39 per month, or $14.29 per year if paid upfront, to keep Couchsurfing alive. This member contribution is required to access the Couchsurfing website and mobile applications. Your member contributions will be used to support Couchsurfing through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and to continue keeping this community safe. This is a decision of last resort, and not one easily made. To make your contribution, simply login to the website or mobile application.

There is good news: All Couchsurfing members can now send unlimited messages and Couch requests. As third-party advertising is no longer supporting Couchsurfing, all third-party advertising will soon be removed from the website and mobile applications. Member contributions will allow us to significantly reduce the cost of Verification in the near future. The Couchsurfing website and mobile applications will continue to evolve and we are in the process of developing many of the exciting features requested by the community.

Thai woman suicide because of Coronavirus Lockdown

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A woman who took rat poison this week outside Thailand's finance ministry over the slow rollout of aid during the coronavirus lockdown was promised on Tuesday she would get her money soon. For millions of other Thais, the waiting continues.
Thailand announced last month it would give 15,000 baht ($462.82) to those whose jobs have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak and containment measures, which included orders for malls and other businesses to shut down a month ago.
The relief, worth $7.4 billion in all, has not come fast enough for many Thais, whose everyday struggles have been worsened by sudden lack of income when domestic economic activities came to a halt.
The woman who poisoned herself on Monday was protesting against the long process for an application she had submitted a month ago, accusing the government of disregard for her plight.
She is recovering in hospital and will receive her payment by Wednesday, a finance ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.
Attachak Sattayanurak, a lecturer at Chiang Mai University whose academic research on the urban poor has led him to meet many Thais who applied to the aid programme, said the woman who took the poison symbolised a far bigger problem.
"The public suicide attempt reflected absolute despair of one small person trying to send a message that the government doesn't take care of ordinary people," he said.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said in a televised address on Tuesday that he was well aware of the struggles people were facing, particularly those on low incomes.
"We're taking care of people from all sectors, whether farmers, freelancers, formal or informal laborers," he said.
Business groups have estimated that 10 million people, or 26% of the country's workforce, will have been out of work if the outbreak drags on a few months, due to restrictions on sectors including retail and construction.
In all, 24 million people applied for the relief aid and as of this week, 7.5 million have received the first of three monthly payments of 5,000 baht ($154.27), Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana said on Tuesday.
A total of 16 million applications were found to meet the criteria, but only 10.6 million of them have been approved, while the rest are still being evaluated, the minister said.
The government on Tuesday lifted the maximum number of workers able to get the benefits to 16 million from 14 million and also pledged help for 10 million farmers separately.
Thailand has pledged measures worth at least 2.4 trillion baht ($74.05 billion), equal to more than 14% of the country's GDP, to help individuals and businesses affected by the pandemic.
University lecturer Attachak said Thailand needed to act fast.
"The COVID-19 outbreak has made inequality in Thailand more stark ... Those in need must be helped across the board and promptly," he said.
Economists forecast a grim year ahead with the worst contraction since the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis due to a decline in exports and a prolonged impact on tourism, a growth engine for Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.
"All these will be further exacerbated by lockdown measures which disrupt domestic economic activities," said Nomura economist Charnon Boonnuch.
The country has so far recorded 2,938 cases of COVID-19 and 54 deaths.

Doctor commiting burglaries at a condominium

Bernama
A doctor was arrested by police last Thursday on suspicion of committing at least 22 burglaries at a condominium he has been staying at for the past six years, with losses amounting to nearly RM500,000.
Northeast district police chief, Soffian Santong, said the 38-year-old suspect was detained at Gurney Park Condominium in Gurney Drive at 6pm.
“Police seized six TVs, five video players, 27 laptops, 68 mobile phones, identity cards, passports, bags and 35 keys, among other things. The value of the stolen property is RM160,000,” he told reporters today.
“His modus operandi was to enter unlocked homes early in the morning to steal valuables from the living room to sell them at a cheap price,” Soffian said. The suspect who is being held under remand does not have a criminal record and police believe he acted alone.
Meanwhile, in another case, police arrested a female trainee doctor and two men on suspicion of committing 13 break-ins since April at a luxury condominium in Tanjung Tokong, with losses amounting to RM296,350.
“Police arrested a 34-year-old man after he broke into a home at 8pm on Thursday. A bag, wallet, branded shoes and digital camera were confiscated,” said Soffian.
Police then arrested a couple, aged 24, at 11.20am on Saturday in front of a lift, while they were trying to make a getaway.
Investigations led to the discovery of a telecommunications company storage room where stolen goods were kept.
Among other things, police confiscated several TVs, luggage, computers, electrical goods and accessories worth RM80,000. - Bernama
